Anna Desbarèdes is the young wife of a wealthy industrialist and lives in Blaye, a small town in France. In that tiny provincial town, life is monotonous and the resulting boredom makes the young woman deeply unhappy. One day, as she is attending her son's piano lesson, a terrible scream reaches her ears. A woman has been murdered in a nearby bar. The tragic scene, which Anna witnesses, increases her upset, and the next day she returns to the bar. There she meets Chauvin, a young worker. A sympathetic bond is established between the two, and Anna makes her new friend tell her many details about the crime the bar was the scene of. In her sick brain of an unhappy woman is born the idea, indeed the hope, that Chauvin will fall in love with her and then kill her, as happened to the other woman. After a few days, Anna is convinced that Chauvin will kill her: having left her house, she goes to the bar where she has arranged to meet Chauvin.
