Arcovazzi, a militia fascist, has to arrest a well-known philosopher who has always been an opponent of the regime, Professor Bonafè: the film recounts the relationship between the two characters, the odyssey they go through occupied Italy in 1944 to reach Rome and the friendship that is established between them despite their ideological differences. In Rome, Arcovazzi parades in a federal uniform but the city has been liberated by the Allies and the population, after much discontent, lashes out by attacking him. It is the good professor Bonafè who saves him.
