The story of Desideria, a restless young girl, unfolds in the middle-class Rome of the 1980s. In contrast, her mother Viola (Stefania Sandrelli) is a comely and cheerful woman who indulges in many amorous adventures with ever different men. Although she has provided her daughter with an excellent education, Viola has never been a particularly affectionate mother and Desideria suffers for this, feeling at odds with her and envying her.
