Francesco Cenci, known for his cruelty, is hated and feared even by his own family. When he discovers that his daughter Beatrice loves Olimpio Calvetti, the steward of the castle, and that his son Giacomo is having an affair with his stepmother Lucrezia, the situation precipitates. Francesco attempts to kill Giacomo, but the latter, with Lucrezia, plots against him. Olimpio is hunted down and threatened with death, but when Francesco attempts to shoot him from the balcony, he falls and dies. After his death, Judge Marcantonio Ranieri investigates. Amid suspicion, accusations and torture, Beatrice confesses under pressure and is accused of patricide.
